Coordinating Two Plans
Your benefits and your spouse’s benefits working together
If you have benefit coverage through your spouse’s employer, you may receive reimbursement of your eligible expenses from both plans. To apply to have your benefits coordinated with your spouse’s benefits, contact Ellement at 1-844-440-1045 (Toll Free) or 204-954-7300 (in Winnipeg) or email LCCBenefits@ellement.ca.
Follow these procedures to receive the maximum amount of reimbursement:
If the Expenses are Yours
- Submit a claim to Manulife with your original receipts.
- After you receive payment and the explanation of benefits from Manulife and assuming you are also covered as a dependent under your spouse’s plan, submit a claim to your spouse’s plan for any unpaid portion of the expenses, with the explanation of benefits from Manulife.
Example: You require the services of a physiotherapist. The cost of your sessions totals $200. You submit your claim to Manulife and receive $160 (80% of $200). You will receive your reimbursement with an explanation of benefits from Manulife. Send that along with the necessary forms for submission to your spouse’s plan. You should be reimbursed for the remainder according to the coverage provided under your spouse’s plan.
- If there are still some expenses not paid after submitting to both your and your spouse’s plan and you have a Health Spending Account (HSA), use the regular health or dental claim form and submit it to your Manulife plan checking the HSA box on the form.
If the Expenses are For Your Spouse
- Submit a claim to your spouse’s plan first, with your spouse’s original receipts.
- If your spouse is covered as a dependent under your Worker Benefit Plans, submit a claim to Manulife for any unpaid expenses, with the explanation of benefits from your spouse’s plan.
- If there are still some expenses not paid after submitting to both your spouse’s plan and your plan and you have a Health Spending Account (HSA), use the regular health or dental claim form and submit it to your Manulife plan checking the HSA box on the form. (If your spouse has a HSA remaining expenses should go to her plan HSA first).
If the Expenses are For Your Children
- If your birthday is earlier in the year than your spouse’s birthday, follow the same procedures as for your expenses.
- If your spouse’s birthday is earlier in the year, follow the same procedures as for your spouse’s expenses.
If your spouse’s plan is also with Manulife, Manulife will automatically coordinate claims between the two plans so you don’t have to re-submit.
Please contact us if you are coordinating your benefits with that of an ex-spouse for your children.
